Located in south of Paris not very far, Vaux le Vicomte palace was the privately owned residence of Nicolas Fouquet, the Superintendent of Finances in France from 1653 until 1661 under King Louis XIV. While Fouquet hired the best architects to design Vaux le Vicomte residence and the gardens, later on the same team designed the Sun King’s shrine at Versailles. The architects involved were: André Le Nôtre (landscape designer), Louis Le Vau (architect), and Charles Le Brun (painter and decorator).
Many of you may not know, but most of the famous Hollywood movies were filmed in Vaux le Vicomte Castle, that is how much it resembles the Versailles Castle. To name a few of the movies: Man in the Iron Mask, Marie Antoinette, Vatel, Moonraker…

Although Nicolas Fouquet invited the King Louis XIV along with other important guests as an honor to his new residence with no bad intentions, it was the biggest mistake of his life. Fouquet, ending up in prison for mishandling funds, did not enjoy his new residence for long. King Louis XIV was absolutely furious and jealous for learning that his Superintendent had a more beautiful castle than the King himself.
The gardens of Vaux le Vicomte, which were built using the latest technical, scientific and artistic knowledge of that period, was a genius creation. When you visit the castle, there is a special demonstration explaining the details. Fouquet surely had the passion for art and sense of taste for beauty in order to come up with a masterpiece such as the Chateau de Vaux le Vicomte.
